Saab has been awarded a contract modification to supply more Marine Corps Training Instrumentation Systems (MCTIS) equipment for the US Marine Corps (USMC).

The contract, worth $37m (Skr400m), will see deliveries span from 2025 to 2027.

This move underlines the USMC’s ongoing efforts to integrate Saab’s deployable and expeditionary MCTIS capability, enhancing the training and operational readiness of its forces.

The MCTIS live training system provides US marines with a realistic training environment.

It is designed to hone their tactics, techniques, and procedures, improving their performance and chances of survival in combat.

The system also supports joint training operations with Nato allies during multinational exercises, reinforcing interoperability.

As the new programme of record for the USMC, MCTIS plays a role in the Infantry Officer Course (IOC).

It offers an after-action review of the training, providing future infantry commanders with valuable feedback on their performance.

The high-tech vests, equipped with detectors, offer personalised data and replay capabilities for both during and after simulated battles, offering an objective measure of marine readiness, stated the company.

Saab US president and CEO Erik Smith said: “Our training capability enhances combat readiness by immersing Marines in realistic scenarios and rigorously analysing their decision-making and actions, ultimately delivering on the objective of saving American lives.

“We take pride in providing the premier interoperable, land-based live training capability in the world.”

Saab’s partnership with the USMC started with an initial contract in June 2021, which marked the shift from the preceding Instrumentation and Tactical Engagement Simulation System II to the MCTIS.

In 2022, the USMC further extended its collaboration with Saab through a contract modification under the Force-on-Force Training Systems – Next (FoFTS-Next) programme.

This modification was valued at around $122m, with $54m accounted for in the previous year.

At the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Warfighting Exercise last year, Saab showcased the upgraded capabilities of the MCTIS.
