The 7,500t warship, built by BAE, is equipped with the Sea Viper missile system and is designed to tackle multiple airborne or sea-based targets, according to BBC News.
The ship will provide air defence cover, can carry 60 Royal Marine Commandos and allows a variety of helicopters to operate from its flight deck.
UK Navy Commander-in-Chief Fleet Admiral Sir Trevor Soar said the Type 45 ships were versatile in performing missions such as deterrence, conflict prevention and high intensity war fighting.
The ship is expected to enter service in 2014.
