BAE Systems has teamed up with Cammell Laird to jointly bid for the British Royal Navy’s Type 31e general purpose frigate programme, which is worth an estimated £1.25bn.

Cammell Laird will serve as the prime contractor for the programme if successful. The company will also be responsible for the construction and assembly of the vessels.

BAE Systems is expected to contribute its expertise in warship design, engineering and combat systems to Cammell Laird, which has agreed to build an initial order of five ships at a maximum average price of £250m per vessel.

The Type 31e frigate programme forms part of the UK’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.

UK Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said: “With our cutting-edge Type 26 frigates already being built on the Clyde, I know Scottish skilled engineers will relish the chance to compete to build a brand new class of warships for the growing Royal Navy.
