The US Navy’s 15th Independence-class littoral combat ship will be named USS Canberra (LCS 30).
The 418ft-long LCS 30 is set to be designed and constructed by Austal USA.
It will be the second US Navy vessel to carry the name USS Canberra in honour of the capital city of Australia.
The first vessel to carry the same name was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser that was originally commissioned with the navy in 1943.
LCS 30 will be constructed by American workers at the Austal facility in Mobile, Alabama, and is expected to help strengthen the collaboration between the US and Australia.
Austal chief executive officer David Singleton said: “Austal’s LCS is Australia’s biggest-ever defence export and this announcement is a real honour for us, to have this vessel recognised as a symbol of the US-Australia alliance.”

The US Navy previously announced plans to expand its fleet with the addition of 355 new ships.
LCS 30 is slated to possess a full displacement of 2,784t and will be capable of travelling at a top speed of more than 50k.
It will be equipped with a Bofors 57mm naval gun, a rolling airframe missile (RAM) launcher and four 0.50-calibre machine gun mounts.
Austal USA is operating as the prime contractor for the development of the Independence-class LCSs.
The company is also currently responsible for designing and constructing Expeditionary Fast Transport (T-EPF) vessels for the US Navy.
