Saab has secured a new contract from shipbuilding company ASC for the delivery of an upgraded integrated ship control management and monitoring system (ISCMMS) for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) four Collins-class submarines.
The deal is valued at A$24.2m ($18.86m) and will help support 50 job opportunities in the country, primarily in Adelaide, according to Australian Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne.
Pyne said: “Technological developments keep Australia at the forefront of defence capability, help keep our personnel safe and ensure they have the right equipment to carry out their duties in the defence of the nation.”
Saab previously developed the updated ISCMMS software and hardware during the first phase of the initiative, which was integrated on-board the lead vessel of the Australian Navy’s Collins-class, HMAS Collins, by ASC.
The navy’s HMAS Waller submarine is scheduled to be integrated with the ISCMMS technology later this year.
The system will subsequently be installed on-board the remaining four vessels of the class in 2019 as the submarines undergo their routine maintenance cycles.

By GlobalDataSaab Australia managing director Andy Keough said: “Saab Australia carried out design, software and hardware development work for the updated ISCMMS during the first stage of the project, and this contract acknowledges the success of that work, rolling out the upgrades to the remaining submarines in the fleet.
“Saab’s design and production work has been carried out in Australia involving over 50 Saab and local subcontractor staff.”
The company will be responsible for delivering updated hardware and spares under the deal, which aims to address various obsolescence issues and maintain the RAN submarines’ regional superiority.
Saab’s ISCMMS provides the Collins-class ships with manoeuvring capabilities and fully integrates the management of propulsion, trim, power generation and ship services on-board the vessels.
Additionally, the solution enables crew members to centrally control many of the submarines’ systems.
