Leonardo is set to unveil its newest OTO Marlin 40 naval defence system for the first time at the 2018 edition of the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition & Conference (DIMDEX) in Qatar.
The company has designed its latest OTO Marlin 40 naval gun mount in order to meet the growing requirements of several navies worldwide, which are increasingly using fast, lightweight vessels to carry out patrol operations.
Leonardo’s new naval turret has been specifically developed to delivering superior performance for challenging missions such as anti-missile defence, anti-aircraft warfare and ship-to-ship engagement.
The gun system features a dry weight of only 2,100kg in its remotely controlled variant.
It also possesses high manoeuvrability and is capable of firing multi-purpose, programmable, fused ammunition.
In addition, the fully digital naval turret’s powerful and precise servo-systems allow the barrel to be moved at a speed of 120°/s.

By GlobalDataLeonardo’s OTO Marlin 40 gun mount can be configured to be fully slaved to a combat management system / fire control system (CMS / FCS), as well as being operable via autonomous local control through an independent optical sight and ballistic computation capability.
The naval turret’s high performance, flexibility and low weight make it primarily suited for a vessel’s main armament and / or secondary armament system, thereby ensuring significant protection against manoeuvrable surface and air based threats.
Leonardo is claimed to be one of largest global manufacturers of 40mm naval gun mounts and more than 850 of the company’s systems have been deployed in service with 30 different navies to date.
