L3 Technologies has secured a new contract to support the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Sea 1180 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) programme.
L3 Communications Australia was selected by Luerssen Australia to deliver the integrated communications, bridge, navigation and platform management systems for the entire fleet of the RAN’s 12 OPVs as part of the development.
German ship designer Luerssen previously signed a contract with the Australian Government in January to serve as the prime contractor for the vessels’ construction.
L3 president and chief executive officer Christopher E Kubasik said: “L3’s work on the OPV design and construction phase will enable us to continue to increase our footprint in the Australian defence market.
“This strategy enables the Australian Government’s Naval Shipbuilding Strategy to further benefit from L3 Communications Australia’s advanced maritime integration and manufacturing capabilities.”
Kubasik further noted that the Australian Navy’s OPV programme will enable the company to bundle various maritime solutions in order to provide measurable growth and sustained support for local industries.
