The US Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) has awarded a new contract to EnPro Industries’ Fairbanks Morse to provide servicing for all MSC vessels equipped with the company’s engines.

Fairbanks Morse is expected to service a wide range of engines under the $17.3m deal, including the MAN 48/60, ALCO 251F, Colt-Pielstick PC4.2 and 38D 8-1/8 models.

The various engines are installed on a number of different classes of vessels such as the AS submarines, T-AKE dry cargo / ammunition vessels, T-AO fleet replenishment oilers and T-ESB expeditionary mobile bases, as well as the navy’s Expeditionary Transfer Docks (ESDs).

The agreement will see Fairbanks Morse’s original equipment manufacturer (OEM) authorised technical field service representatives deliver support services to refit, upgrade and carry out preventative maintenance on the engine systems, including scheduled overhauls at 10,000-12,000, 15,000-20,000, 30,000-40,000 and 60,000-80,000 operating-hour milestones.

Fairbanks Morse was previously selected to provide power systems for the US Navy’s 11th San Antonio-class Landing Platform Dock (LPD), which was officially commissioned into service as USS Portland (LPD 27) on 21 April.

The deal covered the development and delivery of four sequentially turbocharged 16-cylinder Colt-Pielstick PC 2.5 diesel engines, which were installed in the vessel’s main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE).
