The Navantia SAGE Automation Group (NSAG) and Flinders University have agreed to collaboratively develop an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) Centre of Excellence (CoE) to support the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) SEA 5000 Future Frigate proposal.
The proposed 200m2 CoE is set to be located at the Tonsley Innovation District and is intended to help strengthen Australia’s sovereign defence capability through training and research initiatives.
The planned development is dependent on Navantia being selected by the RAN to build its future frigates.
Additionally, the $3m facility in Adelaide would feature simulation rooms for the NSAG’s IPMS, which is the naval platform control system that enables the remote control and monitoring of platform systems installed on-board Navantia-designed navy ships.
Navantia Australia managing director Donato Martinez said: “The benefits resulting from the collaboration at this centre will enable the continued development of smart ship technologies, which in turn will provide the RAN with greater cost efficiencies and operational availability of these ships.”
In addition to a Land Base Test Site for testing of sustainment analysis tools such as ARGOS 21, the CoE is slated to provide the navy crew members with access to training using the IPMS system.

By GlobalDataNavantia Australia expects to generate ten new direct job opportunities via the development of the IPMS CoE.
Flinders University vice-chancellor professor Colin Stirling said: “I am delighted that Flinders University is partnering with the Navantia SAGE Automation Group in the establishment of a CoE that that will help to develop national defence capabilities and create jobs here in South Australia.”
The facility will focus on bolstering Australia’s on-ground defence skills and technologies.
It is expected to provide the RAN with formal training, scholarships, work experience, graduate programmes and staff secondment opportunities.
Furthermore, Navantia has also recently formalised a contract with BAE Systems to deliver platform system design and engineering assurance services for the RAN’s Hobart-class air warfare destroyers (DDG) at Garden Island Naval Base.
