The US Navy’s Fleet Cyber Command / US 10th Fleet (FCC / C10F) has developed new training methods that are designed to enable operators to improve their skills in a realistic and challenging environment.
The navy has employed realistic cyber simulation systems to develop the capabilities over its cyber mission forces beyond operational qualifications.
Its Cyber Mission Force teams are currently undergoing the next phase of maturation.
All 40 of the US Navy’s Cyber Mission Force teams were previously validated as being at full operational capability (FOC) by the US Cyber Command on 6 October.
FOC is attained when a unit has been validated by the US Cyber Command as having achieved all necessary manning, capability and training requirements.
The Persistent Cyber Training Environment (PCTE) is managed by the Department of the Army and is expected to incorporate similar distributed training methodologies within module-based systems.

By GlobalDataPCTE is a cloud-based platform that is designed to provide realistic cyber simulations, while supporting individual instruction and certification processes, in addition to enabling cyber operators to conduct simultaneous training operations from opposite sides of the world.
The system is intended to help meet the requirements of all four services and the US Cyber Command.
However, the arrival and full implementation of the PCTE with each of the service branches is yet to happen.
US FCC / C10F cryptologic technician (networks) 1st class Joshua Jarvis said: “Utilising a PCTE provides consistent hands on and real-world experience without jeopardising actual DoD systems with vital / important information.
“Hands-on experience provides the best overall training for personnel working in the cyberspace field, as opposed to other methods of training, which focus on classroom experience with limited hands-on experience.”
