A steel-cutting ceremony for the Qatari Emiri Navy’s first Doha-class corvette has been held at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia, marking the beginning of construction work on the vessel.
The Doha-class vessel is being procured by the Qatari Ministry of Defence as part of the national naval acquisition programme.
Fincantieri is currently building the corvette under a contract valued at approximately €4bn, which covers the construction and delivery of seven surface vessels for the Qatari Emiri Navy.
The contracted vessels comprise four corvettes, one amphibious landing platform dock (LPD) ship and two offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
The company will also be responsible for providing the Qatari Navy with support services for an additional ten years after the vessels’ delivery.
Construction work on all seven of the navy ships is slated to begin from this year and will be carried out at Fincantieri Italian shipyards.
