The Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Anzac-class frigate, HMAS Arunta, has received a full Anzac mid-life capability assurance programme (AMCAP) upgrade.
Delivered by BAE Systems Australia, the upgrade was carried out on the Anzac-class vessel by Australia’s Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA) Alliance.
The alliance is a partnership between the Australian Government, BAE Systems, Saab Australia and Naval Ship Management Australia.
HMAS Arunta is the first Anzac-class frigate to receive the upgrade, which was performed at BAE Systems’ Henderson facility and involved around 300,000 hours of work.
Upgrades on AMCAP on the frigate began in September 2017 and included the replacement of the ageing air search radar capability with the new CEAFAR L-band long-range system.
Other improvements delivered during the works are upgraded ventilation systems, new sewage systems, improvements to the control and monitoring system and engine modifications to improve power and efficiency.

By GlobalDataExpected to rejoin service next year, HMAS Arunta’s new systems will be put through extensive testing followed by sea trials.
BAE Systems Australia director maritime Darren Kirkby said: “This is a project that demonstrates how industry can collaborate to deliver the support the RAN requires for the upgrade, sustainment and maintenance of the surface fleet.
“Our Williamstown team undertook the AMCAP design and the Henderson team undertook the installation on HMAS Arunta, these teams continue to provide significant sustainment, design and upgrade support to the Australian Navy.”
Upgrades on the remaining seven vessels of the class are expected to be completed by 2023.
Nearly 650 employees are currently working on the upgrade of the Australian Navy’s Anzac-class frigates, including 400 BAE Systems Australia employees.
The entire fleet of eight Anzac-class ships will be replaced by the RAN’s new Hunter-class frigates. The first of nine Hunter-class vessels is expected to enter service in the late 2020s.
