The US State Department has given clearance for a possible sale of assault amphibious vehicles (AAVs) and associated equipment to Spain.

The potential Foreign Military Sale is valued at around $107m.

In connection with the deal, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of this possible sale.

If Congress approves the deal, Spain is expected to receive eight AAVs, personnel (AAVP-7A1) reliability, availability, maintainability / rebuilt to standard (RAM/RS) and two AAVs, command (AAVC-7A1) RAM/RS.

The Government of Spain also seeks to procure one AAV Recovery (AAVR-7A1) RAM/RS.

The acquisition of these 11 vehicles will add to Spain’s existing fleet of 19 AAVs.

In addition, the sale will include enhanced armour applique kits (EAAK), spare and repair parts, tools and test equipment, technical data and publications, training and training material.

Other provisions in the deal include US Government and contractor technical and logistics support services, and related elements of logistics and programme support.

In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

“It is vital to the US national interest to assist Spain in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.”

The proposed sale is expected to enhance Spain’s expeditionary capability to tackle regional threats and also improve stability in the region.

BAE Systems has been named the principal contractor for the programme.

The BAE Systems-developed assault amphibious vehicles can be used to transport troops and cargo from ship to shore.

The vessels have the capability to assault any shoreline from the well decks of assault ships.
