KBR has secured a contract to provide services in support of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division’s (NAWCAD) Surface/Aviation Interoperability Laboratory (SAIL).
The cost-plus-fixed-fee contract is valued at $41m and requires KBR to provide engineering, technical, operational, test and logistics services.
It will also cover facilities testing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, installed avionics and ship-combat systems.
SAIL is a shore-based lab that functions as an operational US Navy vessel. It is used as a military test asset to test aircraft and shipboard systems before they are fielded.
The test platform is used for several aircraft, including MQ-4C Triton, MQ-25 Stingray, P-8A Poseidon, F-35B/C Lighting II, MQ-8B/C Fire Scout, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, E-2C/D Hawkeye, EA-18G Growler and MV-22 Osprey.
The lab features shipboard combat systems, including the ones used on US Navy aircraft carriers, guided-missile destroyers and littoral combat ships to assist it in the testing.

By GlobalDataKBR Government Solutions US president Byron Bright said: “KBR fully understands that SAIL is a critical node in the navy’s testing operations.
“We have supported this unique, world-class laboratory since its inception 15 years ago and will continue to work alongside the navy to make sure systems are tested and ready for the fleet.”
The company noted that the contract services will be delivered to support SAIL for the conduct of research and development (R&D) programmes for the navy and other US military branches.
In addition, services will support systems integration, simulation and stimulation systems development, test planning and conduct, as well as other efforts such as C4ISR systems interoperability, and technology demonstration programmes.
KBR will perform the work within the contract at NAWCAD, Patuxent River, Maryland. Completion of the work is expected in July 2024.
