The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has started the deployment of ships and associated forces in the Indo-Pacific region as part of its preparations to take part in the RIMPAC exercise.
RIMPAC, or Rim of the Pacific Exercise, is a biennial maritime exercise held in Hawaii, US.
Australian Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said: “It’s important during global challenges that Australia continues to demonstrate its commitment to its partners and to a secure and prosperous region.
“The ADF conducts regular military-to-military engagements throughout the Indo-Pacific every year.
“These engagements deepen Australia’s partnerships with security forces in the region and enhances our ability to operate with partner nations during security or humanitarian crises.”
The deployment will help in conducting exercises within Southeast Asia, while some ships will depart for Hawaii to participate in the RIMPAC.
