Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) has selected The Timken Company to provide the main reduction gears for the new frigates under construction for the US Navy.
FMM was selected by the US Navy for the construction of the new Constellation (FFG-62) Class of guided-missile frigates. The contract includes the construction of up to ten vessels.
If all options are exercised, the total value of the contract for Timken would exceed $140m.
The gears will be provided by Timken’s Philadelphia Gear business.
It will design the important elements of the propulsion system of the ship at its technical centre in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
They will be manufactured at its Santa Fe Springs, California marine center of excellence.

By GlobalDataTimken group vice-president Carl Rapp said: “We’ve worked on many US Navy ships over the years and are proud to continue that relationship supplying essential elements for this next generation ship.
“We congratulate Fincantieri Marinette Marine on winning this new class of warship and thank them for entrusting us with this critical role.”
The ships are around 500ft-long and provide multi-mission capabilities across different modes of operations, such as air, anti-submarine, surface, and electronic warfare.
Earlier this month, the US Navy named the first ship in the new guided missile frigate (FFG(X)) class as USS Constellation (FFG 62).
The FFG(X) ships, notional designation of the multi-mission guided-missile frigates, will now be known as Constellation-class frigates.
FMM awarded a contract to Pearlson Shiplift for the design and construction of a shiplift system at the Wisconsin Naval Shipyard. Upon completion, it will be the largest shiplift system in the US.
