Fincantieri’s Naval Integrated shipyard has delivered the newly built logistics support ship (LSS) Vulcano to the Italian Navy.
According to the Italian shipbuilder, the logistics support ship delivery is part of the multi-year programme to renew the Italian Navy’s fleet.
The 193m-long LSS Vulcano is part of the Flotte Logistique (FLOTLOG) programme, which includes the construction of four LSS for the French Navy.
The Vulcano project is being executed by the temporary consortium between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group under the Italian-French LSS Program led by Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).
Fincantieri said that Vulcano is classified by RINA.
The LSS can accommodate a total of 235 people, including crew members and special officers.

The Italian fleet renewal programme also involves the construction of the transport and landing helicopter dock (LHD) ‘Trieste’ and seven multipurpose offshore patrol ships (PPA).
It was approved by the Government and Parliament and began in May 2015 (‘Naval Act’) under support of the international organisation for cooperation on arms Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement (OCCAR).
All three classes of ships are dual use vessels meant for both standard military purposes and civil protection.
The auxiliary propulsion system of these vessels is designed to have a low environmental impact, thus reducing pollution emissions.
Construction of Trieste is underway in Muggiano shipyard with delivery scheduled for next year, while the seven PPAs will enter the fleet starting this year.
Furthermore, the company launched the third PPA Raimondo Montecuccoli at its shipyard in Riva Trigoso, Genoa.
