MBDA has secured a contract to equip the UK Royal Navy’s six Type 45 destroyers with the Common Anti-Air Missile (CAMM) air defence missile system.

The CAMM system is known as the ‘Sea Ceptor’ in the Royal Navy.

Under the 11-year contract, MBDA will integrate the CAMM system into the Type 45 destroyers’ Sea Viper command and control (C2) weapon systems.

Sea Ceptor is a ship-based all-weather air defence weapon system that, in combination with fully-active Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) capabilities, offers protection against aerial threats.

UK Defence Procurement Minister Jeremy Quin said: “Enhancing our destroyer capabilities, this investment reaffirms our commitment to equip the Royal Navy with the most advanced and powerful defensive systems.

“This upgrade ensures the Type 45 remains hugely respected by naval fleets across the globe and secures highly-skilled jobs and investment.”

According to MBDA, the new capability will offer a 50% increase in the overall missile capacity of the vessels.

CAMM capabilities will be installed to the destroyers via 24 additional launcher cells.

Besides this, Royal Navy’s ten-year contract Eurosam will refresh the Aster 30 missile currently in service as part of the Sea Viper system.

Royal Navy Fleet Commander vice admiral Jerry Kyd CBE said: “These programmes will provide an exceptional capability to the front line, ensuring the RN remains poised to defend the surface fleet, and most importantly the Carrier Strike Group, against complex air threats both now and into the future.”

CAMM system is also selected for the new Type 26 frigates and will be fitted to Type 31 in the future. Frigates of Type 26 and 31 classes are currently under construction.

Last month, MBDA secured a new contract to equip the Brazilian Navy’s new Tamandaré-class frigates with the Sea Ceptor.
