The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded a contract to Motorola Solutions.
The contract is valued at $82.3m (approximately €69.9m).
Under the contract, Motorola Solutions will provide digital terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) networks for each of the German Navy’s 16 vessels and training platforms.
The systems will be integrated into the current IT infrastructure of the German Navy.
The secure digital radio communications allow the onboard security work force to see the real-time operational status of each of the naval platforms.
In addition, portable TETRA radios provide instant workgroup communications between teams, allowing employees to stay connected.

By GlobalDataMotorola Solutions international sales and services senior vice-president Mark Schmidl said: “Successful naval operations depend on planning, precision and trusted communications that are purposefully designed and proven to perform in these kinds of mission-critical operations.
“We’re proud to extend our ongoing partnership with the German Armed Forces and we look forward to supporting the security, safety and success of the German Navy’s missions.”
Furthermore, the new TETRA digital radio system will be interoperable with the communications networks of the German Armed Forces.
It can also be accessed with networks of all other German public safety companies.
During emergency or crisis situations, this capability allows successful partnership where ‘interagency communication’ is necessary.
