India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully tested the vertical launch short-range surface-to-air missile (VL-SRSAM).
The test was conducted aboard an Indian Navy ship at Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the coast of Odisha in Chandipur, India on 24 June.
The missile launch was witnessed by senior officials of the Indian Navy and DRDO.
During the flight test, the VL-SRSAM was launched against a high-speed aerial target mimicking an aircraft.
The missile successfully engaged the designated target.
As part of the test, a range of tracking instruments was deployed to monitor several health parameters and the flight path of the vehicle.

By GlobalDataIndian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said: “The system has added an armour that will further enhance defence capability of Indian Naval ships against aerial threats.”
Indian Navy Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral R Hari Kumar also lauded the efforts of DRDO and the Indian Navy for the successful flight test.
According to CNS Hari Kumar, the indigenously developed missile system will boost the Indian Navy’s defensive capabilities.
The VL-SRSAM is a ship-borne weapon system that neutralises a range of aerial threats at a short range, including sea-skimming targets.
DRDO chairman and Department of Defence R&D secretary Dr G Satheesh Reddy said: “The test has proved the integration of indigenous weapon system onboard Indian Naval Ships.
“It will prove to be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy and is another milestone towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.”
The launch of VL-SRSAM comes after two successful trials in February and December last year.
