The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the successful flight test of the vertical launch short-range surface-to-air missile (VL-SRSAM).
The test was carried out by India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) together with the Indian Navy.
It was conducted at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the coast of Odisha in Chandipur, India on 23 August.
The VL-SRSAM launch was witnessed by senior scientists from DRDO’s labs, including Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research & Development Laboratory and R&D Engineers.
During the flight test, VL-SRSAM was launched from aboard an Indian Navy ship against a high-speed uncrewed aerial target to demonstrate its vertical launch capabilities.
Following the launch, the missiles were able to intercept the designated target with high precision.

By GlobalDataThe flight path and other performance parameters of the vehicle during this test were monitored using various range instruments installed by ITR.
It included telemetry systems, radar and an electro-optical tracking system.
The VL-SRSAM system, designed and developed indigenously by DRDO, is armed with an indigenous radio frequency seeker.
Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh appreciated the efforts of the teams involved in the success of the test and said that this VL-SRSAM is a ‘force multiplier’ for the Indian Navy.
DRDO chairman and Department of Defence R&D secretary Dr G Satheesh Reddy said: “The trial has proved the effectiveness of the weapon system.
“It will further strengthen the Indian Navy for neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets.”
In June, the DRDO conducted a VL-SRSAM flight test to validate its capability to integrate with the Indian Navy ships.
