The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of E-2D Advanced Hawkeye (AHE) aircraft to Japan.
It has already been approved by the US State Department.
The FMS, which is valued at approximately $1.38bn, includes up to five E-2D AHE airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft along with 12 T56-A-427A engines, of which two will be provided in spares, while ten will be delivered pre-installed.
In addition, the package comprises of five pre-installed APY-9 radars, five pre-installed AN/AYK-27 integrated navigation control and display systems and five installed and one spare multifunction information distribution system joint tactical radio system terminals.
The Japanese Government has further requested the delivery of five installed and one spare ALQ-217 electronic support measures systems and 12 LN-251 global positioning systems/inertial navigation systems featuring ten pre-embedded and two additional M-Code receiver or airborne selective availability anti-spoofing modules.
The US will also provide necessary aircraft ancillary, personal protective and support equipment; spare/repair parts; ferry services; software; publications and technical documentation; personnel training; and required US government and contractor engineering, logistics and technical support.

In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the US by improving the security of a major ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Asia-Pacific region.”
An addition to Japan’s existing E-2C Hawkeye fleet, the new AEW&C aircraft are expected to enhance Japanese military forces’ capabilities to conduct defensive security missions to safeguard homeland.
Japan will deploy E-2D aircraft to perform several air and naval missions in the Pacific region to further improve country’s situational awareness.
