Qii.AI, a Canada-based artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted digital inspection software provider, has signed a license and AI customisation agreement with the country’s Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE).
Under this agreement, Qii platform will be delivered for use in the ship inspection programme of the Royal Canadian Navy.
NETE is Canada’s Department of National Defence’s key naval test and evaluation centre.
Leveraging the Qii.AI system, ship inspections via drone imagery can be finished in a fraction of the time consumed as against conventional approaches.
AI further speeds up the process by automating the detection and measurement of issues that require remediation, such as corrosion.
Commenting on the potential of the technology being provided by Qii.AI to the Royal Canadian Navy, the company’s CEO Michael H Cohen said that the technology be applied broadly across military and non-military shipping assets.

Cohen added: “We are extremely proud of the success we have had so far in working with the Canadian Navy through its Sandbox program, to bring this project to this point, and we are extremely excited to commence work customising the full spectrum of our technological capabilities, from thermal, to visual, to sonar, to fit the navy’s unique needs.
“We’re very confident that once we have shown the efficiency and accuracy that we can add for Canada’s naval inspection program, other branches of the military and partner militaries will take notice.”
The Qii.AI platform will offer data analytics, while the visual data collection aspect of the ship-inspection programme will be undertaken leveraging small inspection drones from US drone manufacturer Skydio.
Skydio cofounder and CEO Adam Bry said: “Autonomous drones will revolutionise naval inspections by creating comprehensive digital copies of vessels.
“Skydio 3D Scan automates the capture process, and partnering with Qii.AI enables an end-to-end AI-driven workflow to help operators make better decisions faster. We are excited to help build this program for the Royal Canadian Navy, and are looking forward to more success in this sector.”
