The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a contract to QinetiQ Training and Simulation to develop and deliver a shore-based trainer.
The contract’s value and delivery timeline have not been disclosed by the company.
QinetiQ will design the trainer to replicate the Platform Management System currently installed onboard UK’s Daring-class or Type 45 destroyer fleet.
The simulator will allow the Royal Navy personnel who oversee the operation and maintenance of advanced warships’ power and propulsion plants to develop their skills on dry land, by providing a real-time picture of key power and propulsion technologies.
This will enable them to train according to the Type 45’s pre and post-Power Improvement Project (PIP) configurations. Under a £160m contract awarded in 2018, the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers are undergoing the PIP to rectify their propulsion deficiencies.
The new high-fidelity trainer will feature a control centre, a combination of physical controls and photo-realistic touchscreen simulations, six satellite outstations, and an intuitive instructor-operating station. The station will be constructed using operator-centred design methodologies.
