Boeing has secured a contract to continue providing support to the Indian Navy's fleet of P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft for another three years.

The new contract continues the services provided by the company under the programme’s current initial production contract, which is slated to expire in October.

Boeing will offer field and logistics services, in addition to providing engineering, support and planning assistance as part of the deal.

The scope of the project also includes robust material support, including a 737-based component services programme that will be carried out together with Boeing Commercial Aviation Services’ Fleet Services division.

Boeing P-8I sustainment programme manager Stephen Schmidt said: “This contract will substantially bolster Boeing’s performance-based support to the Indian Navy and should maintain or increase the operational capability of the eight-aircraft fleet.”

The Indian Navy entered into an approximately $2.1bn contract to purchase the P-8I fleet on 1 January 2009, and the first aircraft was delivered to India on 15 May 2013.

Indian Naval Air Squadron 312A currently operates eight P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft at INS Rajali.

The P-8I is a variant of Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon aircraft, which was developed to replace the US Navy’s traditional P-3 aircraft fleet.
