1. Navy Chief of Information’s tweet on the US upholding the standards of freedom of navigation
Navy Chief of Information, the official Twitter account of the US Navy’s Chief of Information (CHINFO), shared an article on Chinese navy ships coming close to 12 nautical miles of the US coast, thereby entering US territorial waters, according to the Pentagon. Five Chinese naval ships, including three warships, a sustainment ship, and an amphibious assault ship, entered the US territorial waters as they moved across the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, the article noted. Pentagon officials stated that the vessels complied with international law and did not threaten to attack.
The Navy Chief of Information tweeted that the US Navy upheld the standards of freedom of navigation and peacefully allowed the Chinese warships to navigate through its territorial waters. Chinese officials, however, had earlier strongly objected to a US military surveillance jet flying close to an artificial island being created by China in the South China sea.

4. Nicholas Drummond’s tweet on Australia’s decision to buy a nuclear attack submarine
Nicholas Drummond, a defence industry analyst and consultant, tweeted on Australia’s plans to purchase a nuclear attack submarine under an agreement with the UK and the US. Drummond tweeted that naval shipbuilding company BAE Systems Maritime’s Astute Class nuclear-powered fleet submarines (SSN) would be a perfect choice for Australia. The Astute Class SSN Audacious, for example, is 97m long with proven capabilities, he added. The submarine can be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, which can hit targets within a range of 1,200km from the coast.
Drummond stated that the Astute Class SSN will be a better fit than the US Virginia Class as it costs lesser and requires fewer crew. He added that the partnership with the UK and the US could lead to the development of a new super SSN class, which may combine the best features of both the ships. The partnership could also lead to the development of a multi-role submarine capable of both conventional attack and nuclear weapon launch, which will reduce deterrent costs and increase availability, he added.
