4. Chris Cavas’ tweet on German frigate deployment in the western Pacific

Chris Cavas, a naval warfare journalist and commentator, shared a tweet on the planned deployment of a German frigate to the Indo-Pacific region in August 2021. The deployment will require the frigate to pass through the South China sea, which is the first since 2002. It is part of the Indo-Pacific policy guidelines established in September 2020 and also indicates Germany’s opposition to China’s claims on the South China sea.

European countries such as the UK, France and Germany have increased their presence in the South China sea witnessed by the passing of a French nuclear submarine, an amphibious assault ship and a frigate in February. The deployments are aimed at asserting freedom of navigation in the disputed South China sea waters, while posing as the protectors of international rules.
