Engineering services company Babcock International has signed a tripartite memorandum of implementation (MoI) with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the UK Government.
The MoI was signed onboard HMS Defender in Odesa as part of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) deployment.

Building on the agreement signed in October last year aboard HMS Prince of Wales, the two countries will now promote the Ukrainian naval capabilities enhancement projects (UNCEP).
The company has been designated as the major industrial partner for these programmes.
Babcock CEO David Lockwood said: “This marks the beginning of a new international relationship for Babcock, bringing together our new ship capability, our infrastructure and support capability, and our new strong relationship with the UK Government.”
The UNCEP programme includes sale of two refurbished Sandown class mine countermeasure vessels, enhancements to existing navy platforms, development and joint production of eight fast missile ships, the latest frigate capabilities, carrier-based weapons, as well as training of navy personnel.

By GlobalDataIt also includes developing, implementing and completing a ‘shipyard regeneration plan’ and working together to rehabilitate Ukrainian shipyards.
UK Defence Procurement Minister Jeremy Quin said: “I am delighted that British and Ukrainian industry will work together on these projects, which will provide world-leading capabilities and provide opportunities for both our nations to boost our shipbuilding enterprises.”
To carry out these projects, Babcock will lead industrial partners in the UK and Ukraine to help the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
The engineering services company will receive support from other companies, such as MBDA, Thales, and Royal Haskoning DHV for the Ukrainian naval projects.
Babcock noted that work will now start on the contracts to execute several projects in the programme.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence said: “Today’s Memorandum gives a new impetus to our co-operation in naval industry and will facilitate further development of the Ukrainian Navy.”
In April, Babcock announced the completion of whole ship critical design review (WSCDR) for the Type 31 frigate.
