BAE Systems has secured a contract with the Dutch Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT) to deliver eight Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems.
The systems are for the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian Navy. The agreement also encompasses installation, training, documentation, spares, and tools.
This contract is a component of the joint anti-submarine warfare frigates programme that the two nations are collaborating on.
Each country will receive two frigates, with each frigate being equipped with two of the naval gun systems.
Additionally, there is an option included for BAE Systems’ 3P programmable ammunition and further guns for training purposes.
The delivery of the first gun system is anticipated to take place in 2026.

The Bofors 40Mk4 features a compact design and light weight.
Its capabilities extend to anti-aircraft and anti-surface warfare, with the ability to switch between different types of ammunition seamlessly.
This flexibility allows for effective targeting against a diverse range of threats, whether they originate from the air, land, or sea.
The programmable 40mm Bofors 3P ammunition enhances combat flexibility and can be programmed in six different modes, each optimised for a specific type of effect.
This combination of a proven gun system and advanced munitions technology provides a platform ready to tackle both anticipated and unexpected challenges.
Last year, the UK Ministry of Defence issued a Request for Information (RfI) concerning operational and training ammunition.
This RfI targeted compatibility with BAE Systems’ 57mm naval weapon system and the 40mm Bofors gun for installation on the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates.
