The US Navy has contracted BAE Systems to upgrade Mk 45 5-inch naval gun systems, including the overhaul of existing systems, to the Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration.
This modification, worth $23.5m, supplements a prior $47m contract, culminating in a total value surpassing $70m.
The Mk 45 Mod 4 upgrade will incorporate a longer 62-calibre barrel and reinforced gun mount, alongside a fully digital control system that seamlessly integrates with existing targeting and fire control data.
These improvements are designed to accommodate modern munitions with increased firing energy and pave the way for future precision-guided projectiles with extended ranges.
This initiative represents a cost-efficient strategy to furnish US Navy personnel with enhanced long-range strike and defence capabilities.
The modernisation of these gun systems will deliver latest technology to support ammunition types and future operational needs, all at a lower cost.
