The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale of BQM-177A subsonic sea-skimming aerial targets (SSATs), follow-on technical support and associated equipment to Japan.
The deal carried an estimated total cost of $113m and intends to ensure that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) remains equipped to address current and future threats.

This acquisition follows the $150m FMS request for Aegis-class destroyer follow-on technical support from Japan.
Under the latest sale, Japan seeks to acquire up to two BQM-177A SSATs for its Aegis system equipped vessels (ASEVs). The JMSDF operates a fleet of eight Aegis-equipped destroyers including two Maya–class, two Atago-class and four Kongo-class warships.
This aerial target meets diverse mission needs with a range of internal and external payloads, including scoring, identification, friend or foe, radio frequency and infrared augmentation, electronic countermeasures, and tow targets.
The package also comprises non-MDE items such as GQM-163 target drones and follow-on technical support for ASEVs.

The implementation of this sale does not necessitate additional US Government or contractor personnel in Japan.
