Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and Thales have signed a contract to deliver and integrate the Thales’s Mission and Combat System on four MKS 180 class frigates of the German Navy.
As per the €1.5bn contract, Damen will be responsible for the design of the system and will be constructed by German shipyards.
Thales’ naval Centers of Excellence in Hengelo in the Netherlands and Kiel and Wilhelmshaven in Germany will execute the contract in partnership with other German subcontractors.
The Mission and Combat System of Thales consists of the complete Tacticos Combat Management System and the AWWS (Above Water Warfare System) Fire Control Cluster.
Additionally, the contract outlines four ship systems, logistic services and multiple land-based test and training sites.
It also includes the possibility for one or two additional ships.

It will be clubbed with APAR Bl2, which is the evolved version of AESA multifunction radar of Thales.
The MKS 180 class’ first ship is expected to start operations in 2028.
Thales Netherlands CEO Gerben Edelijn said: “Winning such a substantial contract within the strict framework of an objective scoring system reinforces our global leading position in high-end naval integration.
“Thanks to our innovative capabilities, the German Navy will be able to execute both current and future tasks whilst substantially contributing to stability in the operational theatres all over the world.”
