Fairbanks Morse has secured a contract to provide engines for the US Navy’s newest Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) ship.
Under the contract, Fairbanks Morse will build and deliver the four main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) for ESB 6.
ESB 6 is the sixth in a class that includes the first two Expeditionary Transfer Dock (ESD) ships and follow on ESB ships.
Fairbanks Morse will build the MPDEs for ESB 6 at its Beloit, Wisconsin, manufacturing facility.
The ESB vessel will be constructed by General Dynamics NASSCO under a contract with the navy.
Fairbanks Morse President Deepak Navnith said: “We are extremely proud of our history in supporting the US Navy with our engines and systems. As an American manufacturer of medium-speed engines, we place significant value on innovation and working with a partner like the US Navy has helped us deliver the reliability, fuel efficiency and cost savings needed to enable the navy to spend less time on engine maintenance and more time keeping our shores safe.

By GlobalData“We’re pleased to be working with General Dynamics NASSCO to deliver these impressive power systems for the US Navy’s ESD/ESB programme.”
The FM | MAN 6L48/60 MPDE engines feature common rail fuel injection technology. The engines will provide a combined total of 25,920kW of installed power.
The engines are designed to enable higher efficiency, improved fuel consumption, and lower emissions over the lifetime of the systems.
Navnith added: “Fairbanks Morse has made significant financial investments in the Beloit manufacturing facility to accommodate the new generation 48/60 CR product and these facility upgrades ensure that FM will continue to be a strong provider of diesel engines to the US Navy for years to come.”
The ESBs feature flight deck, fuel and equipment storage, magazines, repair spaces, and mission planning spaces.
The ships can be deployed in support of air mine countermeasures, maritime security operations, and counter-piracy operations. ESBs can support humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions.
