Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and the Indonesian Defence Ministry have signed a contract to supply a total six FREMM class frigates for the Indonesian Navy.
The contract includes the upgradation and sale of two Maestrale class frigates and associated logistics support.
The FREMM European multi-mission frigate is a joint programme between France and Italy. It will build 21 FREMM frigates for the French Navy and the Italian Navy.
Meanwhile, the Fincantieri-built Maestrale class frigates are primarily equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). They were built for the Italian Navy (Marina Militare).
Fincantieri noted that the latest contract will help the ties between Italy and Indonesia in a strategic area of the Pacific.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

By GlobalDataFincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono said: “The acquisition of an order of this magnitude allows Fincantieri to also assume global leadership in the surface ships sector, and is the confirmation of the technological leadership of a project once again considered the most innovative on the market which led to 20 ships for several foreign navies, between orders and options.
“This programme has an extraordinary strategic importance, both for the economic return for our country and for the Italian defence supply chain, and because it ensures Fincantieri’s strong positioning in the area, paving the way for the finalisation of further important negotiations for other programmes already in progress also in the civil sector.”
Fincantieri will first acquire the two Maestrale class vessels from the Italian Navy once decommissioned. It will then conduct modernisation of the two Maestrale class vessels.
The modernisation will be carried out in Italy.
During the coming years, construction of these frigates is expected to benefit several Italian shipyards of the Fincantieri group, as well as other companies in the sector.
