The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed two cooperation agreements with Finnish Defence Forces Logistic Command (FDF LogCom) related to torpedo systems for use in anti-submarine warfare operations.
The first of the new agreements is intended to support cooperation between the two companies during the development, procurement and launch of the new Swedish lightweight torpedo system, known as Torpedsystem 47.
Naval System Department head rear admiral Odd Werin said: “This creates opportunities for coordination and thereby lower cost for sustaining and further development of Torpedsystem 47.
“Widened opportunities for cooperation within anti-submarine warfare are also made possible.”
The other agreement covers the provision of the current lightweight torpedo system, Torpedsystem 45, until the new system is able to be deployed.
Werin added: “We have a long and successful experience of developing torpedoes in Sweden.

By GlobalData“During 2022, the Swedish Armed Forces will receive a completely new torpedo system, better in all aspects than the older torpedo Torpedsystem 45.
“It doesn’t only meet the future threats from foreign submarines but is also designed for being successively adaptable to new techniques and arising threats during its lifetime.”
Torpedo 45 will be made operational on-board the Finnish Navy vessel FNS Tornio from autumn next year as part of the lending arrangement.
FMV will be responsible for the launch of the new Torpedsystem 47 lightweight torpedo system, which is to be developed, built and integrated by Saab.
In addition to procuring Torpedsystem 47, FDF LogCom is also set to purchase combat management systems from Saab Surveillance.
