Spanish Navy’s Logistics Support Command has awarded a contract to Spanish shipyard C.N.P. FREIRE, (Freire Shipyard) to construct a new diver support vessel.
This agreement follows a competitive bidding process that saw participation from other major shipyards within the country.
This ship is part of the Spanish Navy’s initiative to modernise and replace its auxiliary fleet to enhance its underwater operational capabilities.
The vessel will be utilised by the Military Diving School, supporting the Navy’s commitment to maintaining its stature as a leader in diving expertise on both national and international stages.
Incorporating environmentally conscious technologies, the vessel is designed to improve fuel efficiency while minimising emissions.
It will measure 31.7 metres (m) in length and 9m across, with an operational range of 500 nautical miles. The design also includes accommodations for up to 30 personnel, ensuring efficient space utilisation and resource management aboard the ship.

By GlobalDataThe ship will be outfitted with advanced equipment such as side-scan sonar, an autonomous vehicle, and a remotely operated vehicle that can operate at depths reaching 900m, significantly enhancing its capability for intricate underwater tasks.
Freire Shipyard general directors Marcos Freire and Guillermo Freire said: “This project, which represents the first contract between our company and the Navy, reinforces our commitment to innovation and supports the strategic needs of this institution, consolidating our collaboration in key initiatives for maritime security and technology.

The vessel is expected to be delivered by the second quarter of 2026.
This contract further solidifies Freire Shipyard’s position in building advanced maritime vessels, leveraging their experience in producing offshore support vessels, fishing boats, oceanographic ships, and research vessels.
Freire Shipyard has previously completed notable constructions like the RRS Discovery for the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council, the Peruvian Navy’s BAP Carrasco, and the Belgium’s Ministry of Defence’s Bélgica among others.
