Thales has provided details as to how its new multi-mission modular Sea Fire radar system installed on the French Navy’s Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire (FTI) future medium-size frigates would help make the seas safe.
With the first system manufactured this year and to be qualified in 2020, the Sea Fire radar uses long-range 3D surveillance, horizon search and surface surveillance capabilities to provide early warning of potential attacks from conventional and emerging air and surface threats.
The contract for the development and construction of five intermediate-size frigates was awarded last year.
Under the FTI programme, the first frigate will be delivered in 2023 and is scheduled to enter service in 2025.
Designed to offer 360° coverage, the radar will be capable of tracking 800 objects simultaneously without saturation at a range of up to 500km in the air and 80km on the surface.
Thales Multifunction Radar bid director Remi Mongabure said: “Sea Fire is like the smartphone of radars. Fully digital and software controlled, it breaks with the past to create the standard of the future.”

Suitable for all types of corvettes and frigates, Sea Fire radar provides smaller vessels with the performance ability of much larger ones and can be upgraded to meet specific client requirements and address emerging threats.
The system will be developed and integrated at Thales facilities in Rouen and Limours in France.
