General Dynamics (GD) Mission Systems has secured a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract worth approximately $208m for the continued procurement, testing and supply of the US Navy’s AN / USC-61(C) Digital Modular Radio (DMR).
The four-channel DMR is the first software-defined radio to offer multiple communication waveforms, as well as multi-level information security for secure tactical voice and data transmissions on-board US Navy vessels and submarines.
The upgraded DMR is intended to increase transmission rates, while lowering static and other audio noise to ensure clearer voice communications.
GD Mission Systems vice-president Paul Parent said: “With more than 700 DMR radios deployed across the US Navy’s fleet, GD continues its commitment to provide the navy with new and innovative radio technologies, developing next-generation communications that support the ever-evolving mission needs of sailors operating around the world.”
The Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) waveform was initially added to the radio in 2012 to improve the US Navy’s beyond line-of-site or satellite voice and data communications by connecting to the MUOS satellite communications network.
MUOS is the US Navy’s advanced satellite communications (SATCOM) system, which offers voice and data communication capability for the US forces at any time and place.

By GlobalDataThe DMRs are fitted with GD’s advanced infosec machine (AIM) encryption chip in order to facilitate simultaneous communication at multiple levels of security on each of the radio’s four channels.
GD previously received an order valued at more than $29m from the US Navy in 2015 for the delivery of 56 units of the AN / USC-61(C) DMR, along with related equipment.
