The German Bundestag and Federal Government have granted approval for the acquisition of additional Type 212CD submarines as part of the German-Norwegian submarine programme with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.
The contract was formalised by Bundeswehr Procurement Agency president Annette Lehnigk-Emden, and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems CEO Oliver Burkhard in Koblenz, following parliamentary consent.
This order is set to positively influence the company’s cash flow for the current fiscal year through advance payments, which will support the project’s milestones.
The Type 212CD submarines represent an evolution from the existing 212A class, featuring enhanced situational awareness, improved interoperability with allied forces, and a lower detectable signature.
These advancements necessitate not only larger production facilities but also sophisticated technology integration during the outfitting process.
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is also focusing on synergies in operation, logistics, and international maintenance for the 212CD submarines.

By GlobalDataThis move was highlighted by the laying of the foundation stone for new service yard facilities in Norway.
The company’s collaboration with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), initiated in 2017, is further solidified by these developments, and industrial partnerships in both Norway and Germany are set to expand.
Oliver Burkhard said: “The turning point in history is finally arriving in the maritime sector. We are delighted at the trust that the German government has once again placed in us with the additional order for the world’s most modern conventional submarine.
“We are making a decisive contribution to the changing times and strengthening the defence capabilities with this strategically important project between Germany and Norway.”
The announcement follows Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ completion of the design phase for the six Type 212CD submarines, marked by the ‘Critical Design Review’ .
Investments have been made in advance for the production line, ensuring readiness for these complex builds.
Additionally, the company has expanded its shipyard capacity by acquiring the former MV WERFTEN site in Wismar, enabling simultaneous construction of submarines and surface vessels and bolstering job creation in the region.
Thyssenkrupp also shared some notable delivery milestones such as the transfer of a MEKO A-200 frigate to Egypt, the christening of the “Inimitable” submarine for Singapore, and the naming of the first Tamandaré-class frigate and commencement of construction on the second vessel in this series at the local shipyard, all indicators of a successful fiscal period.
