Indian shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has achieved a new milestone with the launch of the first large survey vessel for the Indian Navy.
Called Sandhayak, the vessel is the first in the series of four ships being built under the Survey Vessel Large (SVL) project. It has been built at GRSE.
The launch ceremony was attended by GRSE officials, India’s naval officials, members from Indian Armed Forces and other industry partners.
Indian State Defence Minister Ajay Bhatt, who was present at the launch ceremony, said that the ship’s launch is a new milestone for the country’s vision of ‘New India’ by 2030.
Hoping that the vessel will ensure safe navigation in the Indian Ocean Region, Bhatt further noted that the ship ‘will be a major contributor towards meeting the initiatives and vision for sustainable development in the maritime domain’.
He said: “This would help in strengthening our bilateral ties and in opening up & promoting trade opportunities for our nation in the long term.”

By GlobalDataIn October 2018, Indian Ministry of Defence and GRSE signed the contract to build the four survey ships.
Featuring over 80% indigenous content by cost, the ships are fully designed by GRSE and are being built using ‘Integrated Construction’ concepts.
Under its build strategy, the three ships are envisaged to be constructed at L&T Shipbuilding.
In August, GRSE laid down keel for the Indian Navy’s first anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft (ASW-SWC) and for the third vessel in the SVL project.
