Defence contractor and IT services company Harris has secured a contract to upgrade the US Marine Corps’ (USMC) Falcon III AN/PRC-117G manpack radio fleet.
Valued at $75m, the contract will see the company provide Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) narrowband satellite communication upgrades for the tactical radios.
US Senator Chuck Schumer said: “I was proud to secure funding for these MUOS upgrades in the 2019 Defense Appropriations bill to give Harris a chance to compete for this order, and will always fight for investments that both protect our troops and provide a shot in the arm to the Rochester-Finger Lakes economy.”
In 2017, the company received the Navy Portable Radio Program five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract.
The latest order is part of the IDIQ award and will also involve the delivery of ancillary devices, such as antennas for the USMC’s existing AN/PRC-117G radios.
Harris Communication Systems president Dana Mehnert said: “Adding this capability to the 117G will enable the Marines to leverage the proven radios they have already deployed, fought and trained with to access the advanced capabilities and capacity of the MUOS satellites with a simple software upgrade.
