Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has been contracted by Airbus Defense & Space to supply ELM 2022 maritime patrol radar systems for Canada’s C295 MSA aircraft.
The Government of Canada previously agreed to purchase 16 C295 MSA aircraft from Airbus, which are set to be equipped with the newly ordered ELM 2022A advanced surveillance sensors.
The ELM-2022 multi-mode radar has been developed by IAI subsidiary ELTA Systems and is designed for the detection, localisation, classification and tracking of targets over water and land.
It is expected to support Canada’s search and rescue (SAR) operations by detecting and tracking maritime vessels in high sea states and low visibility conditions.
The radar is also capable of providing 360° azimuth and sector mode operation via an antenna located under the fuselage, IAI stated.
ELM-2022 systems are claimed to offer a cost-effective force-multiplier solution for operational missions such as maritime surveillance and EEZ patrol, maritime law enforcement and fishery patrol, air-to-air surveillance and air-to-ground (SAR and GMTI) intelligence, in addition to reconnaissance and surveillance (ISR) missions.
