Kongsberg Maritime has signed a contract with Saab to deliver its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and diver detection sonars for Finnish Navy’s Pohjanmaa-class corvettes.
The navy is developing the vessels under its Squadron 2020 project.
Under the contract worth about Nkr100m ($9.71m), the company will equip the corvettes with its SS2030 and SD9500 sonars which are ideally suited for deployment in shallow-water environments.
Kongsberg sales director Thomas Dahle said: “We are very pleased to have been selected for another sonar programme for the Finnish Navy and to further strengthen our position as a principal supplier of shallow-water ASW, diver detection and mine-hunting equipment.
“The armed forces, as with all defence industries, have to rely upon the most advanced technology available in order to fulfil their responsibilities effectively, and this new naval contract is another resounding testimony to the deep level of trust the KONGSBERG brand has accumulated over our many successful years of trading.”
Principally developed for ASW operations, the active hull-mounted sonar SS2030 uses tracking algorithms and can detect torpedoes or other small objects in the water column.

By GlobalDataThe electronically stabilised transmitting and receiving beams of the sonar can be tilted to adjust to challenging sound speed profiles. Its integrated Sound Propagation Model can determine the optimal tilt settings and improve the Probability of Detection (PoD) ratio.
Kongsberg will deliver the SS2030 sonars complete with hoist-able hull units and ice protection to the Finnish Navy for safe operation in the often harsh conditions of the Baltic Sea.
Meanwhile, the light and compact over-the-side dipping sonar SD9500 has horizontal and vertical positioning capabilities for diver detection and ASW duties. It is capable of performing volumetric survey assignments in shallow, reverberation-limited waters.
