HSSV

Austal has officially christened the Royal Navy of Oman’s (RNO) two 72m high-speed support vessels (HSSVs) at its Henderson, Western Australia shipyard.

The first vessel is named RNOV Al Mubshir (S11), and is scheduled to be delivered in the first half of this year.

Launched last week, the second ship, RNOV Al Naasir, is also expected to be delivered this year following the completion of fitout, sea trials and acceptance tests.

"The high-speed support vessel is an important new addition to the Royal Navy of Oman fleet."

In March 2014, Austal received a $124.9m contract from the RNO to design and construct the two HSSVs.

RNO commander rear admiral Abdullah bin Khamis bin Abdullah Al Raisi said: "The high-speed support vessel is an important new addition to the Royal Navy of Oman fleet and a continuation of a modernisation process that is reinforcing Oman’s naval capabilities and supporting the Sultan Armed Forces (SAF).

"The HSSV will help us fulfil our national mission to protect Omani waters and meet other joint operational support requirements, including search-and-rescue and humanitarian and disaster relief."

Based on the expeditionary fast transport (EPF) platform developed by Austal for the US Navy, the new HSSVs are designed to deliver a high level of performance, manoeuvrability and offer multiple-mission capability and operational flexibility.

The HSSVs features an all-aluminium structure, are capable of achieving a speed of 38k, and can accommodate up to 260 embarked troops, equipment and vehicles for deployment in a range of military operations and logistics support roles.

The vessels have a shallow draft of 3m with a vehicle deck measuring 900m², a carrying capacity of 395t, and a medium-lift aviation capability for a NH-90 helicopter.

The HSSV can be deployed for both open-ocean and coastal missions.
