BAE Systems is set to display the immersive three-dimensional (3D) technology used to provide digital defence capability to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at the SimTecT 2017 conference.

The company's digital technology combines the ‘DNA’ from computer-aided drafting (CAD) and gaming software to help deliver significant benefits for realising a design in partnership with several other partners.

It also offers risk mitigation for product maturity and is able to de-risk construction or manufacturing processes.

BAE Systems Australia chief executive Glynn Phillips said: “This technology provides for a ‘single point of truth’ for designers and engineers, as well as our customer, regardless of where they are located.

“It is a real game changer to move from traditional paper plans and documents required for major manufacturing projects to a fully digital design and manufacturing environment.

“The technology can also be used to identify and solve installation, maintenance, safety and production issues before construction even starts, and is a low-cost desktop training tool.”

The immersion is built to scale and allow designers, engineers, customers and end-users to determine the accessibility of equipment for users and maintenance.

This helps to prevent issues that could affect production work or generate safety hazards during construction or servicing works.

BAE's system allows solutions to be tested and demonstrated to stakeholders and customers, ensuring that any problems are resolved before the finalisation of the design.

"It is a real game changer to move from traditional paper plans and documents required for major manufacturing projects to a fully digital design and manufacturing environment."

The immersive technology has enabled the successful de-risking of construction of the British Royal Navy’s Type 26 Global Combat Ship, which was started in July.

The approach has been used to recognise and reduce potential safety and construction hazards during the digital phase, as well as avoid costly delays and ensure a safe workplace for personnel.

SimTecT is the annual Simulation Technology and Training Conference held by Simulation Australasia.

The event is scheduled to be held this week in Sydney, Australia.
