frigate Provence

French shipyard group DCNS has delivered the French Frégate européenne multi-mission (FREMM) frigate Provence to the French Navy.

The FREMM Provence represents the second vessel in the series ordered by Organisation for Joint Armament (OCCAR) on behalf of the French armament procurement agency, DGA.

FREMM programmes director Anne Bianchi said: "The delivery of the FREMM Provence represents an opportunity to applaud the industrial and technological prowess of DCNS and its subcontractors.

"It underlines our ability to produce first of rank combat ships that meet our client navies needs, such as those of Morocco and Egypt."

Currently, DCNS is involved in the construction of ten frigates under the FREMM programme, of which eight of them are intended for the French Navy.

The remaining two vessels are for the Royal Moroccan Navy and the Egyptian Navy.

FREMM is a joint programme between France and Italy, which aims to build 21 frigates for their navies.

"The delivery of the FREMM Provence represents an opportunity to applaud the industrial and technological prowess of DCNS."

The 140m-long and 20m-wide frigates have a displacement of 6,000t and are capable of accommodating 108 officers and crew.

These FREMMs are capable of carrying naval cruise missiles, Exocet MM40 anti-ship missiles, Aster anti-aircraft missiles, and MU90 anti-submarine torpedoes. In addition, these vessels will have a capacity to accommodate a Caiman marine helicopter, as well as Special Forces and their equipment.

In May, the French Navy’s first FREMM frigate Aquitaine successfully fired its first Exocet MM40 surface-to-surface missile, as well as a naval cruise missile.

Both the missiles were launched from the firing ranges of the French DGA missile testing centre, off of Levant Island.
