Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) has begun construction of the Mexican Navy's Sigma 10514 long-range patrol vessel at Vlissingen in the Netherlands.

The naval vessel's development and delivery was agreed as part of a deal signed earlier this year.

DSNS spokesperson said: “We are extremely proud to have been chosen for this high-profile project.

“This vessel will once again demonstrate DSNS’ capabilities to build for any country in the world in order to meet client requirements. The Sigma 10514 will play a key role in the Mexican Navy’s plans to modernise its fleet.”

The new Damen Sigma 10514 long-range patrol vessel is designed to be built in a modular fashion, with shipbuilding activities taking place in both Mexico and the Netherlands concurrently.

DSNS will construct a total of six modules, including two that are slated to be built at the company's site in Vlissingen. The remaining four will be built at a Mexican shipyard.

"This vessel will once again demonstrate DSNS’ capabilities to build for any country in the world in order to meet client requirements."

The Damen Sigma 10514 vessel is expected to form an integral part of the Mexican Navy’s fleet modernisation project.

It will be capable of carrying out a broad range of missions and enable the navy to participate in international exercises and humanitarian missions, as well as enhance its presence in Mexico's territorial waters and Economic Exclusive Zone.

The company has previously constructed Sigma 10514 ships for the Indonesian Navy.

DSNS delivered the Indonesian Navy’s first SIGMA 10514 Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) frigate to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in February.
