Leonardo has secured a new contract to supply information management software for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) six Collins-class submarines.
The deal was awarded by the Commonwealth of Australia’s Department of Defence and forms part of the country’s Project SEA1439 Phase 5B2 upgrade programme.
Leonardo will be responsible for delivering its Smart Information Dissemination & Management Services (SmartIDMS) software application for the vessels under the terms of the new Submarine Communication Information Exchange Management (SCIEM) agreement.
The software has been designed and developed by the company in the UK, and will enable RAN crew members to upload and download data in a managed way when the submarine has been connected to a network.
SmartIDMS technology is able to intelligently choose the information to be sent or received based on the level of priority, and can also pre-set different rules for a variety of missions.
The system offers significant enhancements in the capabilities of any communications network and can effective handle information dissemination and bandwidth optimisation, thereby saving time and costs by more than 80%.

By GlobalDataLeonardo’s technology will allow other network users to view a virtual submarine at all times, even when the vessel is disconnected.
This will enable users to easily move data onto the submarine, which will then be synchronised when the real submarine re-connects to the network after its rises from the deep underwater to just below the sea surface or periscope depth.
Leonardo’s software application focuses on the optimisation of information delivery rather than simple maximisation of bandwidth.
The system has been specifically designed to be bearer and operating system agnostic and has wide application across the complete digital communications spectrum, thereby providing order of magnitude efficiencies in both military and commercial communications networks.
