Rohde & Schwarz has received a contract from Italian shipbuilder Cantiere Navale Vittoria for the delivery of communication systems for Italian offshore patrol vessels (OPV).

The company will provide supply line of sight (LOS) and beyond line of sight (BLOS) communications systems to the shipyard.

According to the company, authorities from the customs are required to oversee the coastlines to keep a check on smuggling and illegal immigration.

Authorities are expected to be benefitted with R&S M3SR Series4100 high frequency (HF) radios, R&S M3SR Series4400 VHF/UHF radios, and a Coast Guard data link for the monitoring of coastal areas, said Rohde & Schwarz.

Rohde & Schwarz Italy MD Mario Zaccagnini said: “We have been supporting the Guardio di Finanza on land, sea and in the air for many years.

“Rohde & Schwarz and Cantiere Navale Vittoria have a long history of collaboration. We are very proud to have our equipment deployed in these Italian vessels. We deliver safe, future-ready investments for today’s coast guards on time and on budget.”

The vessels will be operated by Guardia di Finanza. The final OPV is slated to be commissioned in 2022.

The OPVs will join the fleet of vessels that feature R&S Postman and external communications systems.

Rohde & Schwarz Italy Sales Engineer Giuseppe Di Riso added: “Rohde & Schwarz radio systems are extremely well engineered and are manufactured in an award-winning factory. They have unique, field-proven reliability.”

In August last year, Rohde & Schwarz supplied its software defined airborne radios (SDR) for the NH90 Sea LION aircraft to the German Navy.
