Rohde & Schwarz will supply its software defined airborne radios (SDR) for the NH90 Sea LION aircraft to the German Navy.
The rotorcraft will be equipped with Rohde & Schwarz’s SDR of the SOVERON family, including national cryptology.
Each aircraft features three R&S M3AR MR6000A VHF/UHF transceivers and spares.
Last month, the NH90 Sea LION helicopter completed a series of mission demonstrations for the German Navy.
The tests covered capabilities such as search and rescue (SAR) missions, navy reconnaissance and delivery of Special Forces equipment, including an inflatable boat.
According to media reports, the Navy has selected the helicopter as the replacement for its fleet of Westland Sea Lynx 88A anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters.

By GlobalDataThe German Navy already selected the NH90 Sea LION aircraft to replace the ageing Sea KING Mk.41s.
Currently, there are 18 NH90 aircraft on order, with the delivery of the first Sea LION helicopters set to take place by the end of this year.
The Sea Lion can be used in support of SAR missions. Besides, the helicopter can be operated on Type 702 (Berlin class) combat support ships, Airbus noted.
Rohde & Schwarz Market Segment Avionics vice-president Stefan Pleyer said: “The NH90 Sea LION carries improved communications equipment, which means that this military helicopter will also be able to operate in civil air space.
“This means that the NH90 can be used in international air space under all conditions. Almost 8,000 SDRs from the R&S M3AR airborne transceiver family are in use worldwide on over 70 different airborne platforms.”
The R&S M3AR MR6000A airborne transceiver allows secure communications up to NATO SECRET.
The SDR is designed to provide interfaces for connecting external devices in support of naval applications and can guard the naval distress frequency.
The devices that can be connected include an automatic direction finder (ADF), a Link 11 data terminal set (DTS), an improved data modem (IDM) or an external encryption device.
